Information for the 2025 course is not yet available.
Harvard Neurology for the Non-Neurologist 2024 Neurology for the Non-Neurologist is a comprehensive live lecture series that will provide the attendee with the opportunity to improve knowledge, competence, and performance in the major sub-specialty areas of modern clinical neurology.
The activity will incorporate presentations, Q&A, multiple-choice questions, and opportunities for the learners to interact with experts in the field. The course will provide updates on the rapidly changing field of clinical neurology. With the knowledge and competence gained, the learner will improve their ability to skillfully diagnose and manage those patients who present with neurological symptoms and disorders.
Who Should Attend
- Specialty Physicians
- Primary Care Physicians
- APPs (PA and NP)
- Psychiatrists
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Review the neurological history and approach to the neurological exam.
- Recognize how to diagnose common neurological problems such as headache, Parkinson’s disease, ischemic stroke, and dementia.
- Learn an approach to the most common neurological symptoms including headache, vision changes, weakness, dizziness, and cognitive changes.
- Apply optimal care to patients with neurological problems who do not require referral to a neurologist.
- Identify ways to provide self-management support to patients with chronic neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, or dementia.
- Recognize and manage neurological emergencies such as ischemic stroke and meningitis/encephalitis.
Mastering the Neurological Examination: An Interactive Workshop
(Optional In-Person Additional Workshop)
We are offering a hands-on interactive workshop where participants will have an opportunity to rotate among four stations led by neurology APP and MD faculty. At each station, participants will focus on a specific element of the neurological exam, including advanced maneuvers, that can be applied to evaluate common neurological symptoms.
Each station is designed to teach attendees the correct methods for conducting a detailed physical exam and to understand how neurological exam findings can help build a differential diagnosis for a neurological symptom and guide further workup. At each station, participants will observe a demonstrated exam with a standardized patient, and then practice their exam skills in real-time. Participants will receive real-time observation, with coaching and immediate, constructive feedback in order to help build skills and enhance understanding of specific exam maneuvers.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the purpose of basic and advanced neurological exam skills and what neurological function they test;
- Apply hands on practice neurological exam techniques to evaluate specific common presenting neurological symptoms (e.g. headache, cognitive concerns, weakness, sensory changes and gait abnormalities);
- Review immediate, constructive feedback and practical guidance to improve neurological examination technique and develop skills in focused neurological assessments.
